Academic Highways

The marriage between scholarship and art has long since been considered to have concluded with irrevocable divorce. Among those who have lamented this state of affairs have been a number of the more important poets and thinkers. Whoever approaches the matter methodically with luck stumbles across some of their children and their childrens' children. One sometimes encounters them in the rest stops along the highways of academe. They wait for a ride to a destination that they only recognize when they have landed there.  Their voices recall those of the early Janis Joplin and Carlos Gardel.

How can literature be celebrated other than between the two covers of a book, on a computer disk, or in the Internet? And how can the aesthetic dimensions, the sublime spiritual world, the impulses, emotions, sparks and ideas in texts come together in meaningful form? It cannot be disputed that knowledge provides a solid analytical foundation. But knowledge beckons to imagination and intuition, for only they can synthesize things to form a new collocation.

The performances from the years 1993 to 2008 experimented with theater, literature and music. They came into being as independent productions both within and beyond the context of university teaching, in collaboration with professional actors, musicians and lay participants.
